Our mission is to support the Albany Public Library in order to help the Library provide education, literacy, career development, cultural enrichment and lifelong learning to the people of Albany and Rensselaer Counties. The organizations below are listed in relation to the various purposes of our mission, beginning with literacy.
Capital Region Literacy Orgs
Literacy New York Greater Capital Region
Literacy NY provides free adult literacy tutoring in New York’s Capital Region. They offer programs at the Albany Public Library, Schenectady Public Library, Saratoga Public Library, and Crandall Public Library (Glens Falls.)
The RED Bookshelf
The RED Bookshelf provides free children’s books on bright red bookshelves throughout Albany to ensure that all children have access to the benefits of book ownership, regardless of income level.
Literacy Also Means Financial Literacy
The AHP Homeownership Center offers programs to promote successful and affordable homeownership in New York’s Capital Regionannual, including the Albany Homebuyer Fair at the Washington Ave Library every April.
Cultural Literacy
The Albany Symphony is one of this region’s most revered music and cultural institutions, having won numerous national awards for its adventurous concert programming, recording projects, composer residencies, and innovative educational efforts with area schools. We are fortunate that the Albany Symphony Vanguard organizes a small prevue concert every March at our Washington Ave. Branch!
The Opalka Gallery is the formal exhibition facility of The Sage Colleges. They curate fantastic events and exhibitions, including #ArtatAPL, a fine arts exhibition at our Pine Hills Branch!
WMHT Public Media
WMHT Public Media is the only locally owned, nonprofit, multichannel public communications organization that reaches beyond the traditional broadcasting model to act as a leader by convening arts, culture, learning and civic interests. They partner with the library on many programs each year, from Stories and Art in the Parks to film screenings and discussions. Donate to their Giving Tuesday campaign and support their mission to provide Community, Culture and Connections.
Media Literacy
YOUTH FX empowers young people through Digital Film & Media Arts. For three years, that included working with Albany kids through “YouthFX@APL.” YouthFX received the first annual APL Community Partner Award in 2018 in recognition of this collaboration. They continue to be one of our favorite partners, advancing media literacy in the capital region!
The Friends and Foundation supported the pilot year of the YouthFX at APL program.
Civic Literacy
Civic Literacy means having the knowledge and skills to effectively participate as a citizen with a stake in local, state, national, and global affairs. Our favorite Civic Literacy partners are Albany’s Neighborhood Associations. Many of them meet at Albany Public Library branches and donate every year to FFAPL Annual Appeal. They all host Library Director, Scott Jarzombek, for his annual Community Report tour. Here in Albany, one of the oldest cities in the United States, civic literacy also means understanding the unique story of our city.
Partners for Albany Stories (PASt) is a collaboration of historical, cultural, and preservation organizations working together to develop a comprehensive and compelling story of Albany’s rich history. Together we will expand the public’s understanding of Albany’s important role in the past and present development of New York State and the nation. Partners include the Albany City Historian (who you can meet in the Local History Room!), and Albany Institute, as well as several local State Historic Sites.
You can support many PASt members on Giving Tuesday including:
Historic Cherry Hill, located on South Pearl Street in the South End, tells a story of America through the lives and experiences of five generations of an Albany, New York, family. Each year they present the Albany History Fair, and the FFAPL is a proud sponsor of this year’s Fair.
Historic Albany Foundation preserves and protects buildings that have architectural, historic or civic value. That includes our beloved Howe Branch Library!
Food Security:
The Regional Food Bank of Northeast New York
The @FoodBankNENY has been helping to feed the poor and hungry in over 23 counties since 1982. Their mission to alleviate hunger in the greater Capital Region is crucial during this pandemic.
There are so many amazing places to show your generosity this Giving Tuesday! Leave a comment and tell us about the cause or organization your passionate about – and leave a link to donate!
