National Library Week 2022 is fast approaching! Show your love and support for your local Albany Public Library by celebrating from April 3rd to the 9th.

National Library Week is a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. National Library Week has been celebrated each year since 1958. This year Molly Shannon, multiple Emmy-nominated and Spirit Award-winning actress, comedian, and legendary Saturday Night Live cast member will help celebrate our nation’s libraries as the honorary chair!

“I am so honored to serve as honorary chair of National Library Week for 2022. My mom was a librarian. She encouraged kids to read. So, the work of librarians and libraries has such a special place in my heart.”

This year’s theme is “Connect with Your Library” in order to promote how libraries are places to get connected with technology, each other, your community, and, of course, with materials!

“Overall, the theme is an explicit call to action—an invitation for communities to join, visit, or advocate for their local libraries.”

“National Library Week”, American Library Association

Libraries of all types continue to go above and beyond to keep their communities connected by expanding resources and embracing inclusion in their programming, resources, and collections. Libraries across the country are making a difference in people’s lives by providing electronic resources and WiFi access for students and workers who may lack internet access at home. It’s time to show our appreciation for this and the many other things that libraries do!

How can you connect with your library and celebrate National Library Week?

  1. Visit the Albany Public Library! Haven’t stopped in for a while? Not a problem! Bring a friend, make a day of it. Browse the books. Say hello to the staff. Sit down and read.
  2. Tell a #MyLibrary story (more info below.) If you love your library, say it loud and proud!
  3. Connect your phone to the library–install the UHLS Mobile app.
  4. Color in a Connect with Your Library coloring sheet!
  5. Donate to the FFAPL on Library Giving Day! Fund innovative programs at the Albany Public Library!

#MyLibrary

Libraries are places where communities connect—to things like broadband, computers, programs and classes, books, movies, video games, and more.”

– Molly Shannon

If you love your library, say it loud and proud. During National Library Week 2022, the American Library Association asks you to share the connections you’ve made thanks to your library. Did you find a great book? Get access to computers? Attend a great program or storytime? Did you make new friends at the library’s book club? Tell your story on social media with the hashtag #MyLibrary and be sure to tag the @AlbanyNYLibrary in your post.

Share your #MyLibrary story during National Library Week – from April 3 through April 9. And one #MyLibrary storyteller will be randomly selected to win a $100 Visa gift card! (Check the ALA website for official rules.) Promoting your library and chance to win a prize? How fun! (Speaking of fun prizes, do you know about #FreeBookFriday?)
