The Albany Public Library Foundation is honored to have been selected as a “Charity of Choice” this year, designated to receive proceeds from the 2018 CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge race. Charity of Choice funds will support APL’s Growing Readers Early Literacy program.

We congratulate our fellow Charity of Choice, the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York!

Every year, hundreds of organizations come together and run, walk or volunteer with their co-workers to support efforts towards the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC). The HMRRC and CDPHP selected the Albany Public Library Foundation and Regional Food Bank to receive donations directly from race participants and from the CDPHP. This year the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge held on May 17, 2018 at 6:25PM will consist of a 3.5-mile race and is taking place at the Empire State Plaza in Albany.

Albany Public Library’s Youth Services programming focuses on literacy, arts, science, and technology. It  provides an inclusive and fun environment to explore literacy and STEM learning through programs like story time, family activities, and even robotics and coding. The  Growing Readers program (formerly known as “APL Raising a Reader”) is one of the early literacy programs provided to families in the Albany area. The program (affiliated with 1000 Books before Kindergarten) encourages caregivers to read 1,000 books to their children before kindergarten to give them the listening vocabulary they need to learn to read. Donations from the 2018 CDPHP® Workforce Team Challenge will help the citywide program reach out further into in-need communities. The program, now entering its third year, is a response to research that indicates children from lower-income families hear a staggering 30 million fewer words than those from higher-income families by the time they are 4 years old. To bridge that gap, a major outreach effort will be launched to connect with and recruit parents in the Arbor Hill, West Hill, and South End communities of Albany to participate in the program.
